Shooting Ruger American W/ 180 gr and 230 gr. Lee cast bullets.
Shooting this Ruger American Ranch Rifle in .300 AAC /BLK / Whisper:
Gathering data to dial in some bolt action sub sonics.
I shoot some test loads in a Ruger American Ranch in .300 BLK. A couple bullets that I cast but had less than good results in my AR platform Rifle[s] 180 grain Lee Precision C309-180-R Double Cavity Mold and the 230 grain Missiles Lee Double Cavity Mold .309-230-5R.
Anywhere I said “150 grain” in this video was a Senior Moment and I meant “180 Grain” And Lee did NOT screw up the magazines in the Ruger American. That is totally Ruger that flogged the dog there.
That 230 grain bullet will just not play well from the AR pistol or carbine uppers. I got major key holing at hypersonic speeds and failure to run the gun with them sub sonic.
The 180 [NOT 150 as stated in the video] would not feed but would run the action if they were chambered.
Just sayin.
So, here you are, folks. Warts and all.
16 minutes of your life you can never reclaim.
The data:
Chronometer is a Caldwell Ballistic Precision unit. 3.5 feet from muzzle.
230 grain Lee .308:
6.0 grains of CFE Pistol, 2.2xx O.A.L.
18 rounds. Once fired mixed 300 BLK brass from Brassman Brass that I have reloaded a couple times.
AR500 3/4 Torso steel @ 100 yards. Vintage K4 Weaver scope just bolted onto the rail, not adjusted. I used a rest cuz I ain’t no sniper.

I was not very concerned with super accuracy in my powder drops and may be + – .1 grain which is under 2% so may be why the min / max is wide?
As far as the 180 grain rounds, I have no idea what I put under those for powder. My feeble notes seem to say 12 grains or so of H110. The cases are way too clean for H110 so I guess I have to work up a load for those. They were either transonic or hypersonic so I want something a bit slower. And still using up the CFE Pistol moving forward.
More as I get it
Enjoy!
