Fear Of Commitment – A reloaders curse, or just mine??
I would like this post to be a discussion as much as anything else. I will start with a story… I was riding with my son the other day in the car, thinking about some of my results from shooting a couple of rifle hand-loads that I had recently put together. My groups were around ¾ to 1 MOA. That being said, I was pretty content with the results. I was contemplating loading up around 50 to 100 pieces of brass with those loads to have on hand. But then it hit me. “What if there is something better in here?” “Is there some variable that I am missing that could improve this performance?”
I read once that reloader are by nature tinkerers.. We like to experiment and see what we can create. A little of this here, a little more of that there.. Perhaps another 10 thousands of seating depth plus or minus.. Maybe there is another velocity / accuracy node.. Perhaps another 0.5 grains of powder.. The variables can seem almost endless.
So back to my point, part of me seems to think that I should just accept what I have, and that is in direct competition with the part of me that want to keep pushing for something better. So my question is, what does everyone else do? Am I obsessing over things that I should not, or am I normal?? (relatively speaking). There does come a point when you just have to “shoot the engineer” as a professor of mine once said. You at some point just have to take what you have or you never get anything out the door. I feel like I might be there.
I would love to hear from others.. Rifle and pistol reloaders. When do you call load development done? Do you have expectations going in (velocity, accuracy, etc…), and when you get there, do you say “Good enough”? Or do you wing it? Or are there other things that you look for in load development?
As always thanks for checking this out and until next time, have fun outside..
Here at The Big Man’s Outdoors, my family and I enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities.. Hunting, Fishing, Shooting, Camping, Hiking, Fire Sitting, and pretty much anything that gets us out. Many of these things I was brought up doing and have really never quit doing. I started reloading as a young teenager, got out of it for a bit, but now I am back… And I forgot how much I really loved it.
