Removing a Stuck Case from a Lee Resizing Die
We’ve all been there; maybe you forgot to lubricate your cases, maybe you grabbed the wrong size shell holder, or maybe you’re just plain unlucky. Whatever the reason, you’ve got a case stuck in a resizing die, and you’re wondering how to get it out. Wonder no more, friends, as this is actually a lot simpler than you’re probably thinking providing you have a few basic tools on-hand.
You safely remove a stuck case you will need:
- Reloading Press (preferably single stage)
- 3/4″ Wrench
- 1/2″ Wrench
- Robertson Screwdriver
- Rubber Mallet
Begin by threading the die into a reloading press, preferably a single stage if one is available. Turrets and progressives will work in a pinch, but can be a bit more challenging to work with due to the additional dies and powder measures usually present.
With the die installed, use the 3/4″ wrench to hold the die body in place while employing the 1/2″ wrench to turn the depriming pin retention nut counter-clockwise to loosen it.
Remove the depriming pin and retention nut, and set them aside, then slide the robertson screwdriver down into the opening until it bottoms out on the inside of the jammed casing.
Using the rubber mallet, gently strike the screwdriver until the case is dislodged. Proceed slowly and with as little force as possible; too much and you’ll risk damaging the casing, or worse, the die. If you’ve elected to mount it in a turret or progressive press, it’s especially important to take your time in order to avoid damaging the turret or toolhead.
With the case free, reinsert the depriming pin and retention nut, finger-tightening to avoid cross-threading the nut. Once secure, use the 3/4″ and 1/2″ wrenches to tighten things down the rest of the way.
