CFE BLECH! – 30 Herrett | Poor Powder Performance in the T/C Contender
William C Chapin
Velocity variations with CFE BLK in my 30 Herrett Super 14 Thompson/Center Contender barrel.
I have been loading IMR 4198 with FMJ bullets in the 150 grain range for IHMSA Silhouette – however, many extruded powders have been elusive lately. It seems to make sense to evaluate other powders that are more available.
CFE BLK performs reasonably in other similar cartridges like 300 Whisper and 7.62.39 *IF* the case is nearly full. I have seen plenty of bizarre behavior when loads are less that compressed.
I’m not alone in seeing 300 FPS velocity swings – a search around the Inter-webs reveals plenty of similar accounts of how this powder performs.
I am Curtis from Jackson, Michigan. My firearms interests include shooting, reloading, casting, a bit of collecting, and occasional competitive shooting.
