The 45/70 was developed by this country to take anything on the North American continent. But the cartridge is so capable that a 300 grain load is still plenty for anything we might run into.

Many shooters want to have good range time or recreational shooting with their 45/70s. Here's a way towards more of that and yet still maintain effectiveness...

This black powder design with the multiple large grease grooves holds lots of lube. But powder coated and lubed with modern lubes, these big Lee 457 405 HB will serve very well with smokeless powder in the popular 45/70 as well as in the 458 Win Mag...

Marlin 1895, Mossberg 500 and some updates

Hodgdon Trail Boss is a great smokeless powder for cartridges like the old 45-70 Government or subsonic load in .308 Winchester. The large volume of this powder makes it possible to fill up a large case for a safe powder burning without the high pressures that would come into play with other smokeless powders. Thanks […]

Pedersoli Sharps subsonic 500 gr loads

The Lee 450 grain flat base bullet for the 45/70 was designed for those shooters who preferred a heavier bullet than the 405 grainer, but didn’t want to go all the way to the 500+ grain bullets. We casted this mold a week ago. But because of the minimal grease grooves, let’s powder coat these […]

This distinctive class of cartridges demands some considerations for best success in our ammo...

Alright guys, today I’m summoning the inner redneck in my video.  For the longest time, I’ve wanted to shoot a car or vehicle.  Nothing illegal, nothing violent, etc…  I’ve just wanted to legally be able to shoot a car/vehicle and see what different cartridges and rounds do.  Opportunities to do so have almost come to […]

Most shooters automatically go to full length resizing their 45/70 rounds...but what is happening when we do that? And if our brass is being excessively worked for no good advantage, then perhaps neck sizing is the way to go...

With the introduction of the Winchester Model 1886 the world of lever actions was changed forever. No previous lever action ever handled as well. No previous lever was as strong. No other lever action ever offered chamberings in such powerful cartridges as .45-70 to 50-110 WCF. The new standard. A new standard is set, and […]
